Strategic Opportunities in Oversized Transport: A Fairbanks Case Study

AUTHOR(S)

Jarik Nemeth

ABSTRACT

This paper delves into the intricacies of oversized transport in Fairbanks, Alaska, highlighting how the region experiences cycles of economic booms and busts, particularly influenced by major local industries. From an entrepreneur's perspective, this study presents a unique angle on traditional business by examining how industries such as mining, logging, construction, manufacturing, trade, transportation, and utilities heavily rely on large equipment. The transport of this equipment across Alaska's extensive 17,681 miles of road systems poses unique challenges and opportunities. Post-COVID-19, the market faced a downturn, but recent substantial contracts in these sectors have revitalized demand for pilot car services, essential for escorting oversized loads. Fairbanks, serving as a crucial staging area for projects and infrastructure developments outside the city, has seen its local pilot car market strained. This shift is pulling vital pilot car services away from Fairbanks, creating an unmet demand and opening significant opportunities for entrepreneurial ventures in the oversized transport sector.
