ABSTRACT

This study investigates the relationship between consumer food subsidies and national development in Nigeria, with a particular focus on their impact on health, security challenges, and anti-social behaviors. The research was conducted in both rural and urban areas of Oshimili North and Aniocha North Local Government Areas in Delta State, using a sample of 384 respondents. Employing a survey research design, the study aimed to assess how consumer food subsidies contribute to national development. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between consumer food subsidies and public health in Nigeria. Additionally, the study identified a clear connection between consumer food subsidies and the reduction of anti-social behaviors. However, the research found no significant correlation between consumer food subsidies and the mitigation of security challenges in the country. The study concludes that consumer food subsidies serve as a strategic tool for improving health and social well-being, thereby fostering national development in Nigeria. Among other recommendations, the study advocates for increased consumer food subsidies to enhance public health, the integration of food subsidy programs with broader social initiatives to address anti-social behaviors, and the development of targeted security strategies separate from food subsidies.
